Kabaddi Player Gurwinder Singh Murdered, Bishnoi Gang Claims Attack

Gurwinder Singh, a kabaddi player in Punjab, was fatally shot in the Samrala block, marking the second high-profile murder of a player in the state within a week. Authorities have confirmed that the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the killing. According to the gang, members Karan Madpur and Tej Chak carried out the attack, while a social media post from a handle associated with Anmol Bishnoi, Lawrence Bishnoi’s brother, issued a stern warning to rivals. The post read: “This is a warning for whoever sides with our enemies. Either mend your ways or be ready for the next bullet to pierce your chest.”

This tragic incident is the 10th recorded murder of a kabaddi player in Punjab since 2016, highlighting the growing infiltration of the sport by criminal gangs and the drug mafia. Kabaddi, once a traditional sport deeply rooted in Punjab’s culture, has over the years become a symbol of wealth, influence, and power. The sport’s increasing popularity among the Punjabi diaspora in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia has led to the involvement of foreign investment and unaccounted money, which has sometimes been linked to criminal activities.

Experts note that several kabaddi players have forged connections with local gangsters and politicians, either to gain financial backing or protection. In many cases, these alliances have led to violent disputes and targeted attacks on players. Money from the drug trade has also been reportedly invested in kabaddi tournaments, further entangling the sport with criminal networks.

This week’s murder comes shortly after another national-level kabaddi player, Tejpal Singh, 26, was beaten and shot in Ludhiana. Although no gang had officially claimed responsibility for Tejpal Singh’s death, two suspects, Gagandeep Singh and Harpreet Singh alias Honey, were arrested. Authorities suggested that an old personal rivalry could have been the motive behind the attack.

Law enforcement officials have expressed concern over the rising violence against kabaddi players and have urged increased vigilance. The latest killings have intensified discussions on the need for stronger security measures within the sports community in Punjab. With gang rivalries and the involvement of organized crime continuing to threaten the safety of athletes, the state faces growing challenges in ensuring that kabaddi remains a safe and respected sport.
