Palestinians in Gaza have expressed hope that whoever wins the U.S. presidential election will take decisive action to end the devastating conflict that has ravaged the territory. Residents of Gaza voiced their despair and pleaded for an end to the ongoing violence, which has claimed thousands of lives and left much of the region in ruins.

Ayman al-Omreiti, 45, a resident of Gaza City’s Al-Daraj neighborhood, said, "We are hanging by a thread, and like every other people in the world, we are looking for someone who can stop the war." He added that their hope lies in the possibility of the American people electing a president who can end the suffering of the Palestinian people. "Our hope is that the American people will choose someone who can end the suffering of the Palestinian people," Omreiti said.
As millions of Americans cast their ballots in a highly contentious election, which polling showed was too close to call, Palestinians like Omreiti are closely watching the results, with some favoring Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris over her Republican rival, Donald Trump. Omreiti, who has been displaced multiple times during the 13-month war, expressed his concern about a potential Trump victory, fearing that his administration would continue policies that have exacerbated the violence in Gaza. "The Palestinian people are worried about a possible Trump victory," he said. "We hope the results will be favorable for his opponent, Harris, because she has called for an end to the war several times."
Another Palestinian resident of Gaza City, Hani Ajur, shared similar sentiments, emphasizing that whoever becomes president must work toward ending the war. Ajur, whose son and brother were killed in the conflict and whose home was destroyed by Israeli shelling, said, "We hope that after all these sacrifices... whoever wins, whether it is Trump or Harris, will put an end to this war and bring peace to the region."
Ajur expressed exhaustion and heartbreak over the relentless violence, noting, "We are exhausted with the bombings, the destruction, the martyrs, the wounded, and the devastation. We're just tired of this life."
The sentiments of Gaza’s residents reflect the immense human toll the war has taken on the population. In addition to widespread casualties, infrastructure in Gaza has been severely damaged, leaving many without homes or basic necessities.
Polls in Israel have shown a majority of Israelis favoring Trump in the election, but some in Gaza are more optimistic about a potential victory for Harris, citing her calls for an end to the violence. Photographer Andy Alpern, who is based in the region, also expressed his support for Harris, seeing her as a figure who might bring a more peaceful approach to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
As the U.S. election results unfold, Palestinians in Gaza continue to hope that the next president will take meaningful steps to end the bloodshed and bring about peace in the region. The outcome of the election, they believe, could be a decisive factor in the future of the Palestinian people and their quest for peace and stability.
