Amid the persistent crisis in Gaza, a remarkable event unfolded as 130 Palestinians arrived in South Africa last week after traveling through Kenya. Relatives reported spending around $2,000 per ticket for this chance to leave the war-torn enclave.
This journey was initiated through an online process with a group named Al-Majd Europe, which provided travel for families possessing passports. Selected individuals were informed via WhatsApp about their security approval, enabling them to exit through Israel-controlled checkpoints for a chartered flight.
Included among the evacuees is 42-year-old Ramzi Abu Youssef, a cancer patient who lost his daughters in an Israeli airstrike last year. He traveled with his wife and three children, emphasizing the urgency of the evacuation for their medical needs and overall safety. Another anonymous family cited persistent bombings and displacement as compelling reasons for their departure.
This development has prompted scrutiny in South Africa, where officials are assessing whether the arrivals possess the necessary documentation and approvals. While some evacuees are residing in hostels, many have found refuge within local Muslim communities. A few individuals have chosen to journey onward to different destinations.
This incident reflects the ongoing plight of Gaza's population, a month following a ceasefire that momentarily halted large-scale violence. It also reveals the complex issues surrounding travel restrictions, humanitarian crises, and the scrutiny faced by Palestinians in their search for safe passage from their homeland.
