Islamabad: The fate of social media platforms like YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok during the upcoming Muharram festival in Pakistan hinges on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's decision, following a request from the Punjab government to impose a ban. The province cited the need to curb "hate material" and misinformation circulating online, especially during this sensitive period marked by large gatherings of Shia Muslims commemorating the martyrdom of the Prophet's grandson.

Shia Muslims observe Muharram with processions and gatherings, symbolizing resistance against oppression, culminating in significant events on the 9th and 10th days of the month. However, Pakistan has seen sectarian violence, with extremist Sunni groups considering Shias as heretics and targeting them with bombings, adding to historical theological tensions between Sunni and Shia Muslims.

In response to security concerns, Pakistani authorities often implement stringent measures during Muharram, including the suspension of internet, mobile phone, and social media services to prevent terrorist activities. The Punjab government has proposed a social media blackout from July 6 to 11, seeking federal approval to control potential unrest fueled by online content.

After a meeting, the Ministry of Interior deferred a decision, stating that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will finalize the matter. The statement clarified that similar requests from other provinces are under consideration, highlighting the broader concern across Pakistan ahead of the anticipated start of Muharram, contingent upon the sighting of the moon.

Meanwhile, a clerical body responsible for moon-sighting will convene to determine the official beginning of Muharram, indicating preparations amid heightened security measures and societal sensitivities during this significant religious period.
