Many people trying to lose weight often add foods like peanut butter, quinoa, and nuts to their diets, believing they are full of protein. But a well-known online nutrition coach, Justin Gichaba, says that these foods are not as healthy for weight loss as people think. In a video shared on Instagram on October 23, Justin explained that many so-called “high-protein” foods actually contain more fats and carbohydrates than protein, which can make people gain weight instead of losing it.
Justin, who has more than 10,000 followers online, shared a list of five common foods that are often seen as rich in protein but can secretly add extra calories to your diet. He explained that these foods may not help in building muscle or reducing fat as much as people believe.
Justin started by talking about peanut butter, which many people use as a snack or spread because they think it is a strong protein source. But according to him, peanut butter is mostly made of fat, which raises the number of calories very quickly. He said, “Even though you get some protein from peanut butter, the fat content is so high that it cannot be called a healthy protein source. It may cause weight gain instead of helping you lose it.”
The second food on his list was beans. Many health experts recommend beans as a plant-based protein, but Justin explained that beans also have a large amount of carbohydrates. He said, “Beans are not bad, but they are not purely a protein source. They contain a lot of carbs that can easily add up, especially when you are trying to control your calorie intake.”
Next, Justin talked about quinoa, a food that has become very popular among health-conscious people. Many consider quinoa a “superfood” rich in protein, but Justin disagreed. “Quinoa does not have as much protein as people think,” he said. “It mostly contains carbohydrates. While it may have a little more protein than rice or other grains, it is still not enough to be your main protein source.”
He then mentioned nuts, like almonds, cashews, and pistachios. Justin pointed out that while nuts have some protein, they are mainly rich in fats. “The fats in nuts are healthy in small amounts,” he explained, “but because of their high fat content, nuts are not a reliable way to meet your daily protein needs. Eating too many can add a lot of extra calories.”
Finally, Justin talked about granola, a popular breakfast or snack item that many believe is healthy. But according to him, granola is one of the most misleading “protein” foods. He said, “Granola has never been a good protein source. It is full of carbohydrates and fats. Even brands that call their granola ‘high-protein’ usually do not provide much protein. Eating too much granola can hurt your fat loss instead of helping it.”
Justin’s advice highlights a very important point for people trying to lose weight or eat healthily — not all protein-rich foods are truly high in protein. Many of them are full of hidden fats and carbohydrates that can increase your calorie intake and slow down your progress.
He encourages people to read nutrition labels carefully before buying food. Instead of relying on marketing claims, one should check how much protein, fat, and carbohydrates each serving actually contains. “If your goal is to lose fat and build muscle, you should get your protein from cleaner sources like chicken breast, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, or lentils,” he added.
Justin also explained that eating foods that are high in both fat and carbs can make it easy to overeat without realizing it. This happens because fatty foods taste better and make you feel full for a shorter time compared to protein-rich meals. He said that a balanced diet with enough protein, fiber, and good fats is the best way to maintain a healthy body.
Nutrition experts generally agree with Justin’s message. They say that while foods like nuts, quinoa, and beans can be part of a balanced diet, they should not be mistaken for high-protein foods. Instead, they should be seen as sources of healthy fats or carbohydrates, depending on how they are used in meals.
For people trying to lose weight, the key is to eat foods in the right balance. A small serving of nuts or quinoa is fine, but it should not replace real protein sources like lean meat or plant-based protein powders.
Justin’s message serves as a gentle reminder that even healthy foods can slow down your weight loss goals if not eaten carefully. Understanding what is truly inside your food is one of the most important steps toward staying fit and healthy.
In today’s world, where food marketing often promotes everything as “high-protein” or “superfood,” Justin’s simple advice helps people make smarter, more informed choices. His main message is clear — always know what you are eating, and do not believe every health label without checking the facts.
