North Korean hackers have reportedly stolen around $3 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017, a significant portion of which has been used to finance the regime's nuclear and missile programs, according to a report released by Microsoft on Thursday. This alarming statistic sheds light on the ongoing cyber threats posed by North Korea and its increasing reliance on digital theft to fund its military ambitions.
The Microsoft 'Digital Defense Report for 2024' indicated that between $600 million and $1 billion of the total stolen cryptocurrency was taken in just the previous year alone. The report further reveals that these illicit funds have accounted for more than half of North Korea's nuclear development expenditures, emphasizing the critical role that cybercrime plays in the nation's strategy to bolster its military capabilities.
In the report, Microsoft analysts detailed the emergence of new North Korean hacking groups, such as Moonstone Sleet, Jade Sleet, Sapphire Sleet, and Citrine Sleet, all of which have been specifically targeting cryptocurrency platforms. Among these groups, Moonstone Sleet has reportedly developed a unique ransomware variant that has been deployed against unidentified entities within the aerospace and defense sectors, not only for intelligence gathering but also for financial gain.

The rise of these new hacking factions indicates a growing sophistication in North Korea's cyber operations, as the regime appears to be ramping up its involvement in ransomware activities and leveraging cybercriminal tools to enhance its financial resources and achieve strategic objectives. Tom Burt, Microsoft's vice president of customer security and trust, noted, "Nation-states are becoming more aggressive in the cyber domain, with ever-growing levels of technical sophistication that reflect increased investment in resources and training."
Microsoft's report also raises concerns about the increasing cyber threats posed by state-sponsored actors, particularly from countries like Russia, China, and Iran. These threats are expected to escalate, especially in the context of the upcoming U.S. presidential election and ongoing geopolitical tensions in Europe and the Middle East.
In response to the rising cyber threats from North Korea, South Korea, the United States, and Japan have recently agreed to enhance their collaborative efforts to combat the regime's illegal cyber activities, which increasingly focus on the virtual currency industry. The three nations emphasized the necessity of strengthening partnerships with the private sector, particularly cryptocurrency service providers, to raise awareness of the cyber threats emanating from Pyongyang and to develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
