Nitrogen Leak in Paris Cryotherapy Session Kills Woman

Post by: Layla Badr

A terrible accident happened in Paris during a cryotherapy session. One young woman has died, and another is in the hospital in very serious condition after a nitrogen gas leak from a cold chamber. French investigators are looking into what went wrong.

The accident took place on Monday evening at a small sports center in the 11th district of Paris. Police say the problem began when nitrogen gas leaked from a cryotherapy machine. Cryotherapy uses very cold temperatures to treat muscle pain and other health issues.

The woman who died worked at the gym and was in her late 20s. The second woman, a customer in her 30s, is now in the hospital in critical condition.

The Paris public prosecutor's office said that an investigation has started to find out exactly what caused the death.

Three other people who were near the victims and tried to help them also needed medical care. Around 150 people were in the gym at the time of the accident, and they were all evacuated quickly after the incident.

Journalists a news agency were at the scene on Monday evening. They saw a body covered with a white sheet being taken out of the gym. Screens were put up in front of the gym door and along the sidewalk to keep the public from seeing what was happening.

Nitrogen is a gas that has no color or smell. It is often used in cryotherapy. In a cryotherapy session, a person goes into a very cold chamber—colder than -100 degrees Celsius—for a short time, usually no longer than three minutes.

People who support cryotherapy say it helps with muscle soreness, stress, joint pain, and skin problems. Many famous athletes and celebrities use it instead of ice packs or cold water baths. However, many health experts say there isn’t enough research to prove it’s safe or effective. They are calling for more studies to understand the risks and benefits.

A man named Diego Brisset, 26, said he came to work out at the gym that evening but found it closed. He said he never tried cryotherapy because he had always heard it could be dangerous.

This is not the first time cryotherapy has caused serious harm. In 2015, a woman in Las Vegas, USA, died after freezing to death inside a cryotherapy chamber. She had reportedly entered the chamber alone after business hours to help ease her pain. Her body was found the next day by a co-worker.

Now, after this tragic event in Paris, many are once again questioning the safety of cryotherapy.
