Officials confirmed that the samples of the suspected patient have been sent to the virology lab in Pune for thorough testing. This step is part of the state's rigorous protocol to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.
Earlier last month, Minister George announced that efforts to prevent Nipah virus outbreaks would be intensified, especially during the critical period from May to September when the virus is most likely to spread. She emphasized the need for extreme caution and detailed several key preventive measures to the public.
The minister strongly advised against the destruction of bat habitats, noting that disturbing these environments could increase the risk of virus transmission. She also cautioned against consuming fruits that have been partially eaten by birds and drinking honey from banana peels, as these could potentially be contaminated by bats. Additionally, she highlighted the necessity of maintaining proper hygiene, recommending thorough hand washing with soap and water if one comes into contact with bats, their excrement, or any objects they might have bitten.
Minister George underscored the importance of educating children about these precautions to ensure widespread community awareness and safety.
During the meeting, the attendees discussed various preventive measures and reviewed the current situation, as well as the steps taken so far to control the potential outbreak. The government has established committees to oversee the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Nipah virus control.
The high-level meeting saw the participation of top officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, the Director of the National Health Mission, and the District Collectors of Malappuram and Kozhikode.
The Nipah virus, which is transmitted from animals to humans, can lead to severe illness and fatalities. On May 19, 2018, a Nipah virus disease (NiV) outbreak was reported in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were 17 deaths and 18 confirmed cases by June 1, 2018. The two affected districts were Kozhikode and Malappuram.
The 2018 outbreak was the third instance of Nipah virus in India, following earlier outbreaks in 2001 and 2007 in West Bengal.
