France’s former president Nicolas Sarkozy, who led the country from 2007 to 2012, has entered prison, making history as the first former EU leader to be jailed. Sarkozy’s imprisonment comes after he was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in seeking funding from Moamer Kadhafi’s Libya for his 2007 presidential campaign. Despite the verdict, Sarkozy continues to assert his innocence, calling himself an “innocent man” as he began his prison term in Paris.
Sarkozy, 70, was escorted to La Santé prison in Paris by police on motorcycles. Supporters gathered outside his residence, waving portraits and chanting slogans in his favor, highlighting the deep political divide over his conviction. “This is truly a sad day for France and for democracy,” said Flora Amanou, a supporter. Sarkozy’s wife, singer Carla Bruni, accompanied him during the transfer, showing solidarity with the former president.
The five-year sentence was handed down last September after the court determined that Sarkozy’s aides attempted to secure illegal campaign funds from Libya in 2005. Prosecutors argued that the deal would have helped Kadhafi restore his international image while benefiting Sarkozy’s election. However, the court acquitted Sarkozy of embezzling Libyan funds, passive corruption, and illicit campaign financing, leaving him convicted solely for criminal conspiracy.
Sarkozy’s lawyers have filed an appeal, and the court of appeal will review the case within two months. Meanwhile, Sarkozy is expected to be held in solitary confinement, in a small nine-square-meter cell, with limited interaction with other inmates. Daily privileges include a single outdoor walk and thrice-weekly visits, providing some control over his confinement while maintaining security.
The former French leader has faced multiple legal challenges since leaving office. In a separate graft case, he served time under house arrest while wearing an electronic tag. The new prison sentence over Libyan funding further complicates his legacy and reinforces the global perception that even high-ranking political figures can face legal accountability.
Public opinion in France is divided. A recent survey indicated that six out of ten adults consider Sarkozy’s sentence fair, though he retains significant support on the French right. President Emmanuel Macron has met privately with Sarkozy and defended the interaction, noting that it was normal to meet a predecessor under such circumstances.
Nicolas Sarkozy’s imprisonment marks a historical moment for France and the European Union, highlighting the consequences of political misconduct and the intersection of legal scrutiny with high-profile governance. His appeal and potential future legal proceedings will continue to capture international attention as France navigates this unprecedented chapter in its political history.
