Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has given fans a glimmer of hope for a return to competitive play, revealing that his long-term knee injury has suddenly improved. The 30-year-old, who has played only five singles matches in the past three years due to wrist and knee surgeries, expressed renewed optimism ahead of the 2025 Australian Open.
“In the last month, I don’t know what it is… something really has changed with my knee,” said Kyrgios. “It's not swelling. It’s not feeling bad after a session.”
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who has been sidelined by persistent rehabilitation struggles, described the recent development as nothing short of miraculous. “I don’t know whether to call it a miracle or anything, but my knee feels like it’s gotten younger by a couple of years,” he shared.
Kyrgios added that he has been able to complete multiple days of training — a first in months — without pain or setbacks. “I don’t want to jinx it, but something in it has gone, kind of allowed me to put three, four days of training together… and be able to actually recover and then build on that,” he explained.
Currently ranked 652 in the world due to his prolonged absence, Kyrgios would require a wild card entry to participate in the Australian Open. He has not competed since losing in the second round of the Miami Open in March 2025.
In a sign of possible readiness, Kyrgios is set to play an exhibition match against women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on December 28, in a unique “Battle of the Sexes” event.
