At least four people lost their lives in a tragic railway accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district on Wednesday after being struck by an oncoming train while crossing tracks. The victims had just alighted from the Chopan-Prayagraj Express at the Chunar junction. Rather than using the platform side to disembark safely, they attempted to cross the tracks, putting themselves directly in the path of the Howrah-Kalka Netaji Express approaching from the opposite direction.
Railway officials confirmed that the accident occurred because the passengers chose to cross the tracks instead of waiting to deboard safely on the designated side. Authorities rushed to the scene to provide emergency assistance, while local law enforcement and railway personnel began an investigation into the incident.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and instructed officials to expedite relief measures and ensure the injured received immediate medical attention. The incident underscores ongoing safety challenges at railway stations and the critical need for public awareness regarding the dangers of crossing tracks outside designated areas.
Railway authorities continue to urge passengers to use foot overbridges and follow safety protocols to prevent similar accidents in the future, as India’s extensive rail network carries millions of passengers daily, making vigilance and adherence to safety measures essential.
