In a dazzling display of luxury and history, the legendary Mellon Blue diamond fetched a staggering $25.6 million at Christie's auction in Geneva on Tuesday. The 9.51-carat blue diamond, graded internally flawless, was sold at the Hotel des Bergues as part of Christie's Magnificent Jewels sale.

Once owned by renowned U.S. horticulturist and art collector Bunny Mellon, the diamond is set in a serpentine ring and has become symbolic of the opulence of a bygone era. Max Fawcett, head of jewellery at Christie's Geneva, described the gem as "an outstanding stone that epitomizes the lifestyle of the Gilded Age."

The sale price, 20,525,000 Swiss francs, was slightly lower than its last auction in 2014, when it sold for over $32 million following Bunny Mellon's death. Analysts attribute the moderated price to geopolitical tensions and a cautious global market, particularly a weakened Chinese economy, which kept many high-profile buyers away.

Tobias Kormind, managing director of 77 Diamonds, commented: "The room was distinctly cautious, and whether this restraint will ripple through the rest of the Geneva season remains to be seen."

Christie’s auction coincides with Sotheby’s Royal and Noble Jewels sale in Geneva, which features historic pieces including a brooch seized from Napoleon Bonaparte after the Battle of Waterloo and the 10.08-carat Glowing Rose pink diamond, expected to fetch around $20 million.

The Mellon Blue diamond, with its flawless clarity and storied past, continues to captivate collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, reinforcing the enduring allure of rare blue diamonds.
