An IndiGo flight operating between Guwahati and Chennai with 168 people onboard made an urgent diversion to Bengaluru late on June 19 after the captain issued a “Mayday” distress call citing insufficient fuel.
Originally scheduled to land in Chennai at around 7:45 p.m., the Airbus A321 entered Chennai airspace when the crew recognised the fuel shortage. The captain immediately informed Chennai Air Traffic Control and was instructed to divert to Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, where the aircraft touched down safely at about 8 p.m. local time.
All passengers and crew disembarked without injury. IndiGo has yet to release an official statement, but sources say the aircraft was refueled in Bengaluru and later continued to Chennai—albeit with significant delays.

The Mayday call, signalling a critical safety threshold, triggered an emergency protocol by ATC and airport authorities. Fuel emergencies are rare in commercial aviation, as carriers meticulously plan reserves, including alternates. The decision to declare mayday and divert highlights the pilot’s adherence to strict safety guidelines.
This incident follows closely on the heels of the June 12 Air India Dreamliner tragedy at Ahmedabad. While unrelated, aviation experts say the Guwahati diversion underscores the importance of proactive in-flight decision-making and robust safety oversight .
International safety records show that fuel-related diversions, though uncommon, are taken seriously. Commercial protocols typically mandate landing with enough fuel to handle in-flight decision changes. The emergency diversion suggests deviations from baseline planning or an unexpected fuel consumption spike.
Aviation regulators are expected to review the flight’s fuel logs, operational data, and communication with ATC. Initial reports indicate the crew followed protocol, with no indication of distress beyond fuel concerns .
IndiGo, India’s largest airline—which operates over 2,200 daily flights to 127 destinations and carries the vast majority of domestic travelers—has a strong safety record. This marks its first publicly disclosed Mayday diversion in recent times.
Industry analysts emphasise the positive outcome: the flight crew acted decisively, ensuring no harm came to passengers. However, questions remain about the root cause. Was it a miscalculation at the time of takeoff, a technical fault, weather-induced burn, or waypoint delay? The Directorate General of Civil Aviation may issue a directive pending the final report.
