Paris – A shocking revelation has emerged in the aftermath of the $102 million daylight heist at the Louvre Museum: the museum’s core security system was protected by the easily guessed password “LOUVRE.” The discovery, made by France’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI), has raised serious questions about the institution’s cybersecurity practices and preparedness.

The high-profile robbery occurred on October 19 when a four-man crew, disguised in construction vests and motorcycle helmets, used a cherry picker to reach the Apollo Gallery. In just seven minutes, the thieves smashed glass display cases with chainsaws and made off with eight priceless gems, including a sapphire diadem, necklace, and a single earring once belonging to Queens Marie-Amelie and Hortense.

Cybersecurity Weaknesses Uncovered

Confidential documents revealed that ANSSI had previously accessed the museum's video surveillance servers using the same simple password. A 2014 audit had flagged serious shortcomings in the Louvre’s cybersecurity, including reliance on software over two decades old to manage critical protection systems. The report warned that any attacker gaining control of these systems could facilitate theft or damage to the museum’s valuable collection.

Despite the warnings, it remains unclear whether the Louvre updated its security protocols or changed passwords in the years following the audit.

Aftermath and Arrests

French authorities have since apprehended four suspects, three of whom are believed to have participated directly in the heist. The suspects are reportedly experienced thieves and may have carried out the robbery on commission. During the getaway, the criminals used the cherry picker to descend, attempted to torch the vehicle, and fled on scooters parked nearby.

Louvre director Laurence des Cars admitted that surveillance cameras failed to adequately cover the thieves’ entry point, noting that the nearest camera faced away from the balcony they used. Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed that while internal security systems operated during the robbery, external protection showed “major flaws.”

Planned Security Upgrades

In response to the heist, the Louvre Museum has announced plans to install “anti-ramming” and “anti-intrusion” barriers by the end of the year. The shocking use of a simplistic password has also sparked wider discussions about the museum’s cybersecurity protocols and the urgent need for modernization to safeguard invaluable cultural treasures.
