A devastating landslide, triggered by torrential rains, struck an illegal gold mining site on Indonesia's Sulawesi island, resulting in a tragic loss of life. The incident occurred in Bone Bolango, a remote area in Gorontalo province, where approximately 33 villagers were engaged in informal mining activities on Sunday.
According to Afifuddin Ilahude, spokesperson for Gorontalo's Search and Rescue Agency, the miners were working in a pit, extracting gold grains when tons of mud suddenly cascaded down the surrounding hillsides. The landslide, fueled by heavy rains, swiftly engulfed the mining area, burying the workers under a deluge of mud and debris.
Rescuers swiftly responded to the scene, managing to extricate two injured individuals shortly after the landslide struck. However, the rescue operation was fraught with challenges due to the difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. By Monday, search teams had recovered the bodies of 11 victims from the debris. Tragically, 20 others remained unaccounted for, prompting intensified efforts to locate and rescue any survivors.

Informal mining operations are widespread in Indonesia, particularly in rural and remote regions, where they provide a vital yet precarious source of income for many. These operations often lack proper safety regulations and infrastructure, exposing workers to significant risks of accidents and fatalities. The sector's informal nature and minimal oversight contribute to such tragic incidents, where miners face perilous conditions without adequate protection.
The landslide at the illegal gold mining site in Bone Bolango underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and regulatory enforcement within Indonesia's mining industry. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to locate the missing individuals and provide support to the affected families. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in informal mining practices and the critical importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all workers in the sector.
