A heart attack can happen suddenly and can be very scary. But the truth is, most heart attacks don’t just come out of nowhere. They usually happen because of unhealthy habits, health problems that are not treated, or warning signs that are ignored.
The good news is, you can reduce your chances of having a heart attack by knowing your risks and making healthy choices.
In this article, we will explain what puts you at risk, how to keep your heart healthy, and simple things you can do every day to help stop a heart attack before it happens.
A heart attack happens when blood can’t reach part of your heart. This is usually because your arteries (the tubes that carry blood) are blocked by a sticky, fatty substance called plaque.
Over time, this plaque builds up inside your arteries, making them narrow and harder for blood to flow. If a blockage happens, the blood can’t get to your heart, and that causes a heart attack.
Anyone can have a heart attack, but some things make it more likely. Some of these you can’t change, like your family history. But many risks you can control by making good lifestyle choices.
Here are some things that increase your chances of a heart attack:
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Diabetes
Smoking
Being overweight
Not exercising enough
Eating unhealthy food
Family history of heart disease
Too much stress
Drinking too much alcohol
Sometimes, your body gives you signs that your heart is at risk. It’s very important to notice these signs early. If you have any of these, talk to a doctor right away:
Pain, tightness, or pressure in your chest
Trouble breathing
Feeling very tired for no clear reason
Pain in your arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
Your heartbeat feels odd or irregular
Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
Swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet
You don’t have to make big, hard changes to protect your heart. Small, simple steps every day can make a huge difference. Here are some easy tips:
1. Eat Healthy Foods
Choose foods that are good for your heart, like:
Fruits and vegetables
Whole grains like oats and brown rice
Lean meats like chicken and fish
Beans and nuts
Healthy oils like olive oil
Try to eat less salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. These can increase your risk of heart problems.
2. Be Active Every Day
You don’t have to join a gym or run long distances. Just try to move your body for at least 30 minutes a day. Walking, cycling, swimming, or even dancing are great for your heart.
3. Quit Smoking
Smoking hurts your heart and your lungs. It increases your chances of having a heart attack. Quitting is hard, but it’s one of the best things you can do for your health.
4. Check Your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol
Visit your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol. If they are high, your doctor will tell you how to lower them with food, exercise, or medicine if needed.
5. Keep a Healthy Weight
Extra weight makes your heart work harder. It can also increase your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. Eating healthy and being active can help you reach a healthy weight.
6. Manage Stress
Too much stress is bad for your heart. Try to relax by breathing deeply, listening to music, going for a walk, or talking to friends. Taking care of your mind is good for your heart too.
7. Limit Alcohol
Drinking too much alcohol is not good for your heart. Try to drink less or stop altogether. If you drink, follow safe limits — one drink a day for women, two for men.
8. Visit Your Doctor Regularly
Don’t wait until you feel sick. Get regular health check-ups. Your doctor can help you find problems early and give you advice to stay healthy.
Many heart attacks can be prevented. But people often don’t realize their risks or don’t take action early enough. Even small changes, done every day, can greatly lower your chances of having a heart attack.
It’s never too early or too late to care for your heart. The more you know, the better you can protect yourself.
A heart attack can be dangerous, but you have the power to reduce your risk. By understanding what puts you at risk and making small healthy changes, you can protect your heart.
Your heart works for you every second of the day. It keeps you alive. Take care of it. Start today — know your risks, make healthy choices, and help stop a heart attack before it ever happens.
