Kingston, ON – David Hatt’s ordinary morning routine turned extraordinary when a quick stop at a gas station led to a life-changing $75 million Lotto Max win, making him Ontario’s largest lottery jackpot winner and the second biggest in Canada’s history.
A Lucky Impulse
On August 18, Hatt, a married father of two, was on his way to the grocery store when a sudden thought made him pause. “Something told me to buy a ticket,” he recalled. Without giving it much thought, he grabbed a quick-pick Lotto Max ticket, completely unaware of the fortune awaiting him.
The next morning, Hatt’s routine drive-thru coffee stop became the moment of a lifetime. Using the OLG app to check his ticket, he initially believed he had won $75,000. “It wasn’t until I took a closer look that I noticed there were a lot more zeros!” he laughed.

Hatt rushed home to tell his wife, carefully preparing her for the shocking news. “I said, ‘I need you to sit down,’ and showed her the screen. She asked in disbelief, ‘Is that $75 million??’ and I loudly said ‘YES!’” The couple’s excitement quickly turned into plans for how they could use their newfound wealth responsibly.
Dreams Realized and Goals Set
While the Hatt family will certainly enjoy their fortune, their focus extends beyond personal luxury. “We want to support our family, but also give back to our community and help the most vulnerable,” Hatt explained. Their approach is to spread the benefit across multiple initiatives rather than supporting a single cause.
In the months following the win, Hatt and his family spent time reflecting on priorities and consulting experts to ensure wise management of the prize. Among their plans is purchasing their dream home, a long-held aspiration previously out of reach. Travel is also high on their agenda, with dreams of exploring Europe’s small towns, countrysides, and hidden gems.
A Personal Treat
Despite his generous outlook, Hatt admits he will indulge himself in one small way: a new set of golf clubs. “We’re going to be pinching ourselves for years to come,” he said, smiling at the thought of their transformed life.
The $75 million win not only changes the Hatt family’s future but also serves as a reminder of how a simple, spontaneous decision can bring unimaginable fortune.
