Released in May 2024, "Not Like Us" was the fifth song in a series aimed at Drake. It came out just hours after Lamar’s previous song, "Meet the Grahams." The song’s strong lyrics, which talked about serious issues like abuse and bad behavior, quickly became a hit, and many people thought Lamar won the rap battle with Drake.
The song became number one on the charts and a favorite in West Coast rap. People loved the song’s strong bass, smooth strings, and Lamar’s clear and powerful way of rapping.
This Grammy win is a big moment for Lamar, who already had 17 Grammy Awards before the night. He won four more on Sunday. This win comes just a week before he is set to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans.
Lamar has been nominated for Record of the Year three times before, but this is his first win in this category. The 37-year-old is known for his thought-provoking lyrics about race and unfairness, while also sharing personal stories. His music often has a jazz feel and has made him one of the most important songwriters today.
In his speech, Lamar dedicated the Grammy to his hometown of Los Angeles, which has been dealing with dangerous wildfires. He honored the city’s neighborhoods, saying, “You know, this is my neck of the woods,” in honor of the place that shaped his music and his life.
