In a pioneering step toward gender-sensitive workplaces, Karnataka has approved a policy granting women one day of paid menstrual leave every month. This decision, applicable to both government and private sector employees, provides women with 12 extra paid leave days annually, acknowledging menstrual health as an essential workplace concern.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah described the move as “a step towards a more humane, understanding, and inclusive workplace,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring dignity and wellbeing at work.
Karnataka, home to over 60 million residents and India’s tech hub Bengaluru, has witnessed a steady rise in female workforce participation in recent years. According to the Institute of What Works to Advance Gender Equality (IWWAGE), rural women’s participation in the workforce increased from 28.2% to 43.5% between 2017-18 and 2023-24, while urban female participation grew from 22% to 28.8% during the same period.

While India currently does not have a national policy on menstrual leave, Karnataka now joins states like Bihar and Kerala in formally recognizing the importance of menstrual health at work. Advocates say the move is likely to encourage more women to stay in employment and contribute actively to economic growth, while also breaking lingering workplace stigmas surrounding menstruation.
Experts suggest that formalizing menstrual leave can help reduce absenteeism linked to menstrual discomfort and create a more supportive environment for women. Companies implementing the policy are expected to adopt a flexible approach, allowing employees to manage their leave without social or professional stigma.
With this policy, Karnataka sets a precedent for other states to consider similar measures, signaling a broader shift toward inclusive employment practices that respect women’s health and wellbeing.
