JetBlue Flight Averts Mid-Air Collision With U.S. Military Jet Near Venezuela

A JetBlue aircraft managed to avoid a serious mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force jet over Venezuela, raising urgent questions on aviation safety and the coordination between military and civilian aircraft.

The episode unfolded on Friday as JetBlue Flight 1112 was en route from Curacao to New York. The Airbus A320 was approximately 40 miles from the Venezuelan coastline when pilots unexpectedly encountered a U.S. Air Force tanker jet flying at the same altitude and in close proximity.

Air traffic control recordings indicated that the military jet had its transponder turned off. This important device assists in tracking the position of aircraft, making the Air Force jet more difficult to detect and thereby heightening collision risks.

The JetBlue pilot communicated to air traffic controllers that the military plane crossed directly into its flight path. Afterward, the aircraft entered Venezuelan airspace, with the pilot characterizing the scenario as nearly resulting in a mid-air collision. To avert calamity, the JetBlue team swiftly changed course.

Senator Maria Cantwell voiced her concerns, emphasizing that military and commercial planes should not share the same airspace without location data being communicated. She stressed the necessity for improved systems to prevent situations like this from recurring.

Both senators advocate for stringent regulations mandating military aircraft to employ ADS-B, a sophisticated tracking system that broadcasts location. They oppose any attempts to lessen these safety measures, particularly in crowded or sensitive airspace.

The U.S. military has stated it is aware of the occurrence and is actively reviewing the circumstances. U.S. Southern Command's representatives noted their aircrew's high level of training and reiterated that safety remains paramount. They are looking into the matter through appropriate channels.

The incident coincided with a surge in U.S. military activities in the southern Caribbean, amid escalating tensions as the U.S. applies pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This has resulted in increased military operations and heightened risks for civilian flights.
