Iran Detains Oil Tanker with Contraband Fuel in Gulf of Oman

Iranian authorities have taken control of an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, revealing it was transporting six million litres of illegal diesel. The vessel's crew consisted of 18 members, including individuals from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. This incident underscores Iran's persistent efforts to curb illegal fuel smuggling in its territorial waters.

Reports indicate that the tanker had deactivated all navigation systems prior to the boarding. Iran frequently publicizes the interception of vessels allegedly involved in illicit fuel transport, emphasizing the lucrative nature of smuggling in a country where fuel prices are among the lowest globally.

The seizure occurred shortly after the United States intercepted a different oil tanker near Venezuela's coast. The US has accused such actions of breaching international sanctions, with previous cases involving oil exports from both Venezuela and Iran. In 2022, the US Treasury imposed sanctions on Venezuela for its ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah.
