As the IPL 2025 mega auction approaches, speculation is mounting that Rohit Sharma, the veteran Indian cricketer and former Mumbai Indians captain, will be moving to a new franchise. Sharma's departure from Mumbai Indians has been anticipated since his removal as captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Hardik Pandya took over the leadership role, a decision that drew criticism from fans and former players alike.

Sharma, known for his significant brand value and cricketing prowess, is expected to attract considerable interest from multiple teams if he enters the auction pool. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) likely to impose a restriction on the number of players teams can retain—up to six players, including those kept via the Right to Match card—there is a strong likelihood that Sharma will be available for a new franchise next season.

Among the teams showing clear interest in acquiring Sharma is the Punjab Kings (PBKS). The franchise, which is yet to secure an IPL title, is keen on bolstering its squad with high-profile players. Sanjay Bangar, PBKS’ Director of Cricket Operations, has publicly expressed interest in Sharma. However, Bangar also noted that any potential move for the star player would be contingent on the remaining budget in their auction purse. "It all depends on whether we have the money in our pockets. If Rohit comes in the auction, I certainly believe he is going to go for a high price," Bangar stated in an interview on the RAO Podcast YouTube channel.

Punjab Kings are particularly motivated to sign a new captain following the retirement of Shikhar Dhawan, who led the team until last season. With Dhawan's exit from the game, PBKS is in search of a new leader, and Rohit Sharma, despite being 37 years old, remains a prime candidate due to his extensive experience and leadership skills. Sharma's recent performances in the T20 World Cup have further demonstrated that he still possesses significant competitive drive and skill.

As the IPL 2025 season approaches, the dynamics of the mega auction will be closely watched, with Sharma’s potential move representing one of the most significant shifts in the league's upcoming season. The anticipation surrounding the auction is building, with many teams eager to capitalize on Sharma’s proven track record and leadership abilities.
