Indonesian authorities have ramped up enforcement in the Riau Islands, apprehending several foreign workers suspected of operating without valid permits in Batam’s industrial and construction sectors.

The Batam Immigration Office reported the detention of six individuals, comprising five Chinese nationals and one Malaysian, during operations carried out from March to April 10 aimed at bolstering oversight.

The crackdown zeroed in on foreign workers thought to be abusing their visas by partaking in unauthorized employment activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two of the Chinese detainees were employed within an industrial zone despite possessing only temporary stay permits, which ban employment.

Additionally, inspections in early April led to the arrest of three more Chinese nationals at a construction site where they were engaged in technical jobs while holding B211 visit visas, typically issued for business purposes only.

In a related incident, immigration officials in Ranai deported two Malaysian workers discovered involved in ship repairs without appropriate work permits.

Authorities reiterated that these enforcement actions are part of a broader strategy to uphold immigration regulations and prevent misuse of visa provisions in vital economic regions.

They also affirmed their commitment to rigorously supervising foreign workers in a bid to uphold local labor norms and ensure lawful employment practices.
