Ashwin’s illustrious career in Test cricket saw him claim an astounding 537 wickets in 106 matches, placing him among the all-time greats. His contributions were not limited to the ball, as he also scored six centuries, proving his mettle as a reliable all-rounder. Beyond Test cricket, he was a vital figure in India’s limited-overs setup, featuring in 116 One-Day Internationals and 65 T20 Internationals.
The decision comes halfway through India’s tour of Australia. Ashwin was left out of the playing XI for the first Test in Perth but was recalled for the second Test in Adelaide. In the third Test in Brisbane, he was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja. Captain Rohit Sharma later disclosed that Ashwin had been contemplating retirement before the series began but had agreed to play the Adelaide Test at the captain’s request.
Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket extend far beyond statistics. Known for his sharp cricketing acumen, remarkable variations, and ability to adapt to different conditions, he has been instrumental in some of India’s most memorable victories, both at home and abroad. Over the years, his skill, resilience, and sportsmanship have earned him widespread respect across the cricketing world.
As Ashwin bids farewell to international cricket, he leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come. From his stunning debut to becoming one of the greatest spinners in cricket history, his journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. The cricketing fraternity and fans worldwide will undoubtedly celebrate his achievements and contributions to the game.
