The fourth Test match between India and England is taking place at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. This match is very important for both teams as India is leading the five-match Test series 2-1. If India wins this match, they will win the series. If England wins, then the series will be level at 2-2, making the fifth Test match very exciting.
What Happened on Day 1
On Day 1, England won the toss and chose to bat first. Their openers came to the pitch with confidence. However, the Indian bowlers did not allow them to settle for long. The pitch was not easy to bat on because it had uneven bounce and some balls turned a lot, making batting difficult.

England’s opener Zak Crawley played well and scored 42 runs before getting out. Ben Duckett could not stay long and got out early. Ollie Pope also struggled and could not make a big score. The Indian bowlers kept bowling tight lines and lengths, putting pressure on the England batsmen.
Joe Root's Brilliant Century
The hero of England’s innings was Joe Root. He showed why he is one of the best batsmen in the world. While other batsmen were getting out one by one, Root stayed calm. He played with patience and skill. He scored his 31st Test century, which was very important for England in this situation.
Root played shots all around the ground. He did not take risks but punished the bad balls whenever he got a chance. His innings helped England cross the 300-run mark, giving them a good total to fight against India.
Other England Batsmen's Performances
Apart from Root, Ben Foakes also played a good innings. He supported Root and helped add runs to the scoreboard. Foakes scored 47 runs, playing sensibly and not giving his wicket away easily. Together, Root and Foakes made an important partnership that saved England from getting all out for a low score.
Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes could not do much with the bat. The Indian bowlers dismissed them quickly. The lower-order batsmen tried to add some runs, but after Root got out, the innings ended soon.
India’s Bowling Performance
India’s bowlers did a great job. The star was spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who took 4 wickets. His bowling was tight, and he did not allow batsmen to play freely. He used the pitch conditions very well, as the ball was turning and bouncing unevenly.
Akash Deep, who was making his debut in this match, also bowled very well. He bowled with good pace and took 3 wickets. His performance gave confidence to the team. Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket each, making sure that England could not score very big.
England’s Final Score
At the end of their innings, England scored 353 runs. It was a good total on this pitch, where batting is not easy. Root’s century was the main reason for this respectable score.
India’s Batting Begins
India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal came to bat with the aim to play carefully and not lose early wickets. However, England’s bowlers started well and bowled in the right areas.
Rohit Sharma played some good shots but got out after scoring 17 runs. Jaiswal also got out early after scoring only 24 runs. The pitch was still difficult to bat on, and England bowlers kept tight pressure.
Shubman Gill and Rajat Patidar at the Crease
After the openers got out, Shubman Gill and Rajat Patidar came to bat. They tried to settle down and not lose their wickets. Both played carefully because they knew that if India lost more wickets quickly, it would put them under pressure.
At the end of Day 2, India had scored 131 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. They were still trailing by 222 runs. Shubman Gill was batting on 26 runs, and Kuldeep Yadav was at the crease with him.
England Bowlers’ Good Performance
England’s bowlers bowled very well in the last session of the day. Shoaib Bashir took 2 important wickets, dismissing Jaiswal and Patidar. Tom Hartley also bowled with control and took 2 wickets, removing Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.
Their tight bowling did not allow Indian batsmen to score runs easily. England will try to take the remaining wickets quickly on Day 3 to gain a big lead.
What to Expect on Day 3
Day 3 will be very important for both teams. India will try to get close to England’s score to avoid batting under pressure in the fourth innings. England, on the other hand, will try to bowl India out cheaply and gain a big lead so that they can put pressure on India by setting a big target.
The pitch will become more difficult to bat on as the match progresses. The cracks will open up, and the ball will turn more, which will help the spinners. Therefore, batting will not be easy on the third and fourth day.
Why This Match Is Important
This match is very important because if India wins, they will win the series. It will also help them in the World Test Championship points table. If England wins, the series will become equal, and the last Test will become a decider.
