Dubai witnessed an unusual and exciting cricket match as India faced the UAE in a T20 game that kept fans on the edge of their seats. While wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Shivam Dube played a major role in troubling the UAE batters, the real surprises came from unexpected player selections and unusual match moments. Here’s a detailed look at the night of twists, turns, and impressive cricketing skills.
Wrist Spinners Keep UAE Guessing
The Indian wrist spinners delivered some of the most tricky and unexpected deliveries of the night. Between them, India bowled 25 balls, and 11 of those deliveries spun in the opposite direction, a clever move that kept UAE batters constantly guessing.

One notable moment was when Harshit Kaushik, a UAE batter, was out after being deceived by a sharp-turning delivery from Kuldeep Yadav. The ball slipped through Kaushik’s defense, showing why wrist spinners are often difficult to play against. While the googly was tricky, the most surprising events came from other parts of the Indian team.
Unexpected Team Selections
The team sheet had its own surprises. Jitesh Sharma, who had practiced hard in net sessions and done hours of fielding practice with coach T. Dilip, was left out of the playing XI. Instead, the gloves were given to Sanju Samson, who had not been a regular participant in India’s net sessions.
Samson, who usually opened the batting in Shubman Gill’s absence, was placed in the middle order at number 5. This position was not familiar to him, as he had only briefly tried it during a tour in Zimbabwe. How Samson would perform in this new spot was uncertain, but he brought energy and focus to the team.
Also making a return was Kuldeep Yadav. Despite being ignored in five Test matches in England on flat and dry pitches, Kuldeep was selected to bowl on a grassy surface in his first T20 International since the World Cup final in Barbados. Speaking after the match, Kuldeep said,
"It was tough for me, but I worked on my bowling and fitness with Adrian Le Roux. Everything came together tonight. In T20 cricket, the key is length and reading what the batters want to do, ball by ball."
Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh, known for his effective left-arm angle, was missing from the squad. He had been a vital part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign, especially with his confident 19th over performance.
Shivam Dube’s Bowling Heroics
Another surprise was Shivam Dube. Primarily picked as a seam-bowling all-rounder in the UAE, he only bowled two overs but took three wickets. This was remarkable considering he had only taken one or two wickets in the last five IPL seasons combined.
Dube credited his improved bowling to the guidance of former South African pacer Morne Morkel. He said,
"The captain and coach told me I would bowl. During the England series, Morne gave me tips to use the crease and bowl from outside. He also advised on slower deliveries and my run-up. These small changes helped me bowl better. My pace is good, and I feel confident with the ball."
A Different Kind of Crowd
The match was also unusual for the crowd. Normally, an India game guarantees a stadium full of cheering fans with flags and chants. On this weeknight in Dubai, the stadium was less than half full and quieter than usual.
Even the toss had its own twist. India had lost 15 internationals in a row, so winning the toss felt special. Suryakumar Yadav, standing with UAE’s Muhammad Waseem, tossed the coin and jokingly told Waseem not to look.
Bowling and Batting Performances
On the field, Jasprit Bumrah looked surprisingly negotiable at times. His fastest ball barely touched 140 km/h, and he ended the night as India’s most expensive wicket-taker. However, he bowled a perfect yorker to Alishan Sharafu, proving his skills at crucial moments.
Kuldeep Yadav and Shivam Dube provided sharp variations, and the overall attack kept UAE batters under pressure. India’s plan worked, but the match highlighted that the attack’s usual stars were not always the ones making the biggest impact.
UAE’s batting saw a mix of early success and sudden collapse. After a decent start of 41 for 2 in the PowerPlay, the team was bowled out for just 57 runs. Lalchand Rajput, the UAE coach, said his players were overwhelmed by India’s big names and struggled against wrist spin, which remains a challenging skill even for top batters.
"They were overawed by India's big names. We should have batted 20 overs. These spinners are rare because even top players struggle against them," Rajput said.
Key Moments of the Match
Abhishek Sharma’s batting was solid as expected, starting with a first-ball six.
Kuldeep Yadav’s return was successful, deceiving batters with sharp spin.
Shivam Dube’s bowling was exceptional, taking three crucial wickets in just two overs.
Sanju Samson adapted to the middle order, filling an important role for the team.
The crowd and stadium atmosphere added an unusual, quieter feel to the match.
The Big Picture
Despite all the twists and surprises, the gap between India and UAE remained clear. India’s experience and skill showed on the field, and while some players performed in unexpected ways, the team still demonstrated its dominance. The match also highlighted how cricket can be full of surprises, with unexpected player selections, tricky spin deliveries, and small moments that turn the game.
The Dubai T20 match was a night full of surprises, clever strategies, and individual brilliance. From Kuldeep Yadav’s spinning deliveries to Shivam Dube’s impressive bowling, and Sanju Samson adapting to a new batting role, India’s performance was a mix of experience and unexpected turns. The UAE team struggled to cope, revealing the wide gap between the two teams. For fans, it was a night where cricket lived up to its unpredictable and exciting reputation.
