The Comoros islands, a small but beautiful archipelago in East Africa, have witnessed a historic development in public transport. For the first time, a passenger ferry that can also carry vehicles has been officially launched to serve the people of the islands. This new service promises to improve travel, trade, and connectivity across the islands, bringing numerous benefits to residents and visitors alike.
The official launch ceremony took place on the island of Anjouan, one of the three main islands of the Comoros. Several important dignitaries attended the event, including Azali Assoumani, the President of The Union of the Comoros, and Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi, the UAE Ambassador to the Comoros. Senior government officials, representatives of Serdal International, and other invited guests were also present to witness this milestone in the country’s maritime history.

Introduction of the Ferry Service
The ferry service is introduced by Serdal International, a joint venture between AD Ports Group, one of the world’s leading port operators, and Resources Investment, an investment company based in Abu Dhabi. Resources Investment focuses on strategic and impactful projects in both emerging and established markets.
The primary aim of this initiative is to strengthen maritime trade in Africa and expand commercial operations in emerging markets, with a particular focus on improving transportation and connectivity across the Comoros islands.
Statement from Serdal International
Abdulaziz Zayed Al Shamsi, the Chief Executive Officer of Serdal International, expressed his excitement about the new service. He said, “We are pleased to introduce a safe, dependable public water transportation service to the Comoros. This initiative will harness the potential of this island network to support community development and drive economic growth, in line with the directives of our wise leadership.”
His words emphasized that the ferry service is not just a transport facility but also a tool for development. By improving travel between islands, the service will support the growth of local communities and boost economic activities, creating opportunities for businesses, tourism, and trade.
Managed by Noatum Maritime
The ferry service is managed by Noatum Maritime, a subsidiary of AD Ports Group. With years of experience in maritime operations, Noatum Maritime ensures that the service will meet international safety and reliability standards. Their role is to provide residents of the Comoros with a trustworthy and affordable mode of travel, which was previously limited due to the scattered nature of the islands and lack of proper inter-island transport.
The Vessel: Yameela
The service will operate through a specially designed vessel named Yameela. The ferry has several important features:
Passenger Capacity: Yameela can carry up to 190 passengers in comfortable, air-conditioned seating.
Vehicle Capacity: The ferry can also transport up to 45 vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and small trucks.
Safety and Comfort: The vessel is equipped with modern safety equipment and amenities to ensure a secure and pleasant journey for passengers.
With these features, Yameela is expected to become a reliable solution for daily commuters, tourists, and traders who need to move between islands efficiently.
The Route
The ferry will operate on a key route connecting the Port of Moroni on Grande Comore, the main island of the archipelago, with the town of Mutsamudu on Anjouan, the second-largest island. This route has long been considered essential for economic and social reasons.
Previously, traveling between the islands was difficult and unpredictable due to limited transport options. The new ferry service will provide a faster, safer, and more dependable connection. Residents can now travel for work, education, healthcare, and trade without facing long delays or safety risks.
Benefits to the People of Comoros
This ferry service is expected to bring a wide range of benefits to the people of the Comoros islands:
Improved Connectivity: Residents of Grande Comore and Anjouan will now have easy access to each other’s islands, making travel for work, education, or family visits more convenient.
Boost to Trade: With the ability to carry vehicles and goods, the ferry will facilitate commerce and trade. Local businesses will find it easier to transport products between islands, reducing costs and increasing opportunities.
Tourism Growth: Tourists will have better access to the islands’ natural beauty, including beaches, volcanoes, and cultural sites. A reliable ferry service is likely to attract more visitors, helping the local tourism industry thrive.
Access to Essential Services: People traveling for medical care, education, or government services will benefit from a regular, dependable ferry schedule. This improved access can enhance the quality of life for island residents.
Economic Development: By connecting communities, enabling trade, and attracting tourism, the ferry service supports broader economic growth. Small businesses, markets, and service providers are likely to see increased opportunities and income.
A Step Toward Modern Maritime Transport
The launch of the Yameela ferry represents a significant milestone for Comoros. It is not only the first passenger ferry capable of carrying vehicles but also a symbol of progress and modernization in the country’s maritime sector.
The partnership between Serdal International, AD Ports Group, and Resources Investment shows how collaboration between local governments and international companies can lead to sustainable development. By focusing on safety, comfort, and reliability, this ferry service sets a benchmark for future transport projects in the region.
Future Prospects
Serdal International has expressed its commitment to further improving maritime infrastructure in emerging markets. This project in Comoros could serve as a model for similar initiatives in other island nations or regions with limited connectivity. By introducing innovative solutions and modern vessels, the company aims to enhance regional trade, create employment, and promote economic growth.
For the Comoros, this ferry service marks the beginning of a new chapter in transportation. As the islands become better connected, residents will enjoy a higher standard of living, businesses will flourish, and visitors will experience a more accessible and welcoming environment.
The launch of the Yameela ferry is more than just a transport initiative. It is a step toward economic growth, social development, and regional integration. By offering a safe, reliable, and affordable mode of inter-island travel, the service is set to transform the daily lives of people in Comoros.
With the support of Serdal International, AD Ports Group, and Resources Investment, this project demonstrates how strategic investment and international cooperation can create meaningful change in emerging markets. For the people of Comoros, the future of travel between their islands has never looked brighter.
