Berlin, Germany: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned "a scandal" in the pronouncements of US President Donald Trump on Gaza from Tuesday, declaring that the United States should take control of the Gaza Strip, remove its current residents, and turn the area into a luxurious destination, which he dubbed "the Riviera of the Middle East.".
During a TV debate ahead of Germany's elections, Scholz expressed his disapproval, saying, "The idea of relocating an entire population is unacceptable and goes against international law." He firmly rejected Trump’s proposal, emphasizing that such actions violate fundamental human rights.
Scholz's political opponent, Friedrich Merz, also agreed with him. "I share this view," he said. But he added that the statement made by Trump is "one of many proposals coming from the American government." Merz advised waiting and seeing how serious these ideas are meant to be and whether they will actually be carried out since there is a lot of political rhetoric involved.

The situation in Gaza remains dire. The region has suffered immense destruction since Israel launched a military offensive against Hamas in response to the October 7, 2023 attack. The war caused severe devastation across the Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal area along the eastern Mediterranean. However, a ceasefire agreement last month has temporarily halted the violence and included a provision for the release of hostages taken by Hamas.
As the world holds its breath, Scholz and other global leaders continue to emphasize the respect for international law and human rights in handling the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
