Dominique Pélicot, a 71-year-old Frenchman, is currently on trial accused of drugging his wife, Gisele Pélicot, and enlisting strangers to sexually assault her. The case, which has stirred widespread shock and revulsion, involves Pélicot allegedly using Lorazepam to incapacitate Gisele and then inviting men he met online to commit the assaults while she was unconscious. The police investigation has revealed that 72 men were involved in at least 92 sexual assaults, with the perpetrators ranging in age from 26 to 74.
According to reports, Pélicot provided the attackers with disturbing instructions to ensure the abuse went unnoticed. He allegedly told them to warm up their hands to avoid waking Gisele from her drugged sleep, avoid using aftershaves or smelling of cigarettes, and to clip their nails. They were also instructed to park their cars away from the house, undress in the kitchen, and wash their hands in warm water to prevent any disturbance during the assaults.

The horrific crimes were uncovered when Pélicot was arrested in 2020 for filming under women’s skirts. During the investigation, authorities discovered evidence of the ongoing abuse, which led to Gisele Pélicot being informed of the decade-long violation she had suffered. Prosecutors have alleged that Pélicot not only facilitated but also participated in the assaults, encouraging the use of degrading language and filming some of the attacks, though no money was exchanged.
Gisele Pélicot has bravely waived her legal right to anonymity to raise awareness about her ordeal. Her lawyer, Antoine Camus, has noted that although Gisele opted against a closed trial, which might have provided more privacy, she is preparing to face the public scrutiny of the courtroom. She has no memory of the assaults and only learned about them through the investigation.
As of now, 20 of the 51 accused men, including Pélicot, are being held in custody, while the others are out on bail. The trial, expected to last four months, will be closely watched as it addresses these grave and disturbing allegations.
