The founder of the Singaporean fashion retail powerhouse FJ Benjamin, Frank Benjamin, died on Wednesday, December 10, at the age of 90. His remarkable journey in the fashion industry has made an indelible impact on Southeast Asia, as he was remembered for his leadership and kindness. In an obituary on Obits.sg, his family described him as “a truly exceptional individual whose compassion, generosity, and unwavering grace enriched the lives of many.” He was a strong pillar of support, inspiring countless individuals in his family and the broader community.
Initiating his venture in 1959, Benjamin guided FJ Benjamin into becoming one of Asia’s preeminent fashion and lifestyle enterprises. He held the position of CEO until 2006 and then served as executive chairman from 1999 until reassuming the role of non-executive chairman in 2017. Although he stepped down from the board in late 2022, he remained active as an emeritus chairman and advisor. His son, Douglas Benjamin, now leads the enterprise as CEO, perpetuating the family's legacy.
With a robust presence throughout the region, FJ Benjamin operates in territories including Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The company represents over 20 international brands, with 144 retail stores and a workforce of approximately 1,600. Its extensive portfolio includes luxury attire, lifestyle products, beauty items, health goods, and watches, featuring popular names such as Cole Haan, Guess, La Senza, Marc Jacobs, and Superdry. Additionally, it has facilitated the distribution for premium watch brands like Guess, Casio, and Nautica, and previously collaborated with Manchester United stores in Singapore.
Under Benjamin’s strategic vision, FJ Benjamin evolved into a recognized entity throughout Southeast Asia, reputable for excellence, integrity, and innovation within the fashion sector. His influence on business, mentorship, and community enhancement has ensured a lasting legacy, inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs and leaders in the region.
