Flights were temporarily halted at Brussels Airport on Tuesday following multiple suspected drone sightings that raised security concerns. The airport spokesperson confirmed that both arrivals and departures were suspended as a precautionary measure.
Operations were also stopped at Charleroi Airport, Belgium’s second-largest airport, as authorities worked to assess the situation. No official announcement has been made regarding when flights will resume.
Skeyes, Belgium’s air traffic control authority, is investigating the incident, though it has not yet released an official statement. The suspension follows a series of similar drone-related disruptions reported recently across Europe, particularly in Germany and Denmark, where drones were spotted near airports and sensitive military areas.
Just days earlier, Belgian authorities detected drone activity over the Kleine-Brogel military base, a site believed to house U.S. nuclear weapons. The Belgian military intelligence agency has launched an inquiry to determine the origin and intent behind the drones.
Belgium’s Defence Minister Theo Francken stated that while it is too early to assign blame, the activity appeared to be the work of “professionals” engaged in a coordinated effort. He described the incidents as attempts to “sow panic and destabilise” the country.
Amid growing geopolitical tensions linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine, suspicions have surfaced regarding potential Russian involvement in increased drone operations over European territories. The investigation into the Brussels and Charleroi airport incidents remains ongoing.
