At the United Nations on Sunday, Israel and Iran engaged in a heated exchange, each pointing fingers at the other as the main threat to peace in the Middle East. This confrontation unfolded during an emergency meeting of the Security Council, convened in response to Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel overnight.

Israel's UN Ambassador, Gilad Erdan, minced no words as he accused Iran of being the "number one global sponsor of terror" and urged the Security Council to take decisive action against Tehran. He called for sanctions on Iran and the designation of its Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, stressing the need for immediate measures to curb Iran's destabilizing activities.

Echoing Israel's sentiments, Deputy US Ambassador Robert Wood emphasized the Security Council's responsibility to ensure Iran's compliance with international resolutions and to address its violations of the UN Charter. Wood hinted at the possibility of additional measures by the United States to hold Iran accountable for its actions.

Iran's UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, defended his country's actions, asserting Iran's right to self-defense in the face of perceived threats. He criticized the Security Council for its failure to maintain international peace and security, portraying Iran's attack as a necessary response to external aggression.

Iravani also called on the Security Council to address what he described as Israel's "genocide against the people of Gaza," linking the escalation in tensions to Israel's ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Against this backdrop of escalating hostilities, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all parties to exercise restraint and step back from the brink of further conflict. He emphasized the importance of defusing tensions and de-escalating the situation to prevent further violence and instability in the region.

Guterres reiterated his condemnation of both Iran's attacks on Israel and the airstrike on Iran's consulate in Damascus, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to avoid further escalation of the conflict.

As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to simmer, the international community faces the daunting challenge of preventing a full-blown conflict and maintaining peace and stability in the volatile Middle East region. Diplomatic efforts and multilateral initiatives will be crucial in finding a path towards resolution and preventing further escalation of hostilities.
