England have announced a 16-man squad for the Ashes series in Australia starting November 21, with spinner Shoaib Bashir and fast bowler Mark Wood returning after injury setbacks. White-ball captain Harry Brook has been named vice-captain, replacing Ollie Pope, while Will Jacks earns a recall to the red-ball side.
Bashir, who fractured his finger during the third Test against India at Lord’s in July, will miss England’s white-ball tour of New Zealand in October. Wood, recovering from knee surgery following an injury sustained during the Champions Trophy in February, is expected to be fit for the Ashes.
“Jacks will miss the white-ball tour of New Zealand with a broken finger but is expected to be fit for the Ashes,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

Test captain Ben Stokes, recovering from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the final Test against India, remains on track to be available for the series opener in Perth. England aim to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since losing the series in 2017-18.
England Ashes Squad: Ben Stokes (captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Mark Wood.
The five-Test series kicks off at Perth on November 21, with England looking to challenge Australia on home soil and bring the Ashes back to England.
