Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed internal road construction in Al Khawaneej 2 and Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1, while continuing similar projects in six other residential areas. The total length of roads under construction and development across all eight areas is 103 kilometres. These initiatives aim to improve mobility, traffic flow, and safety while providing better infrastructure for residents and businesses.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlighted that these projects are part of the directives of Dubai’s leadership to develop infrastructure in residential and industrial communities. He emphasized that the work is designed to meet the city’s growing population needs, enhance the quality of life, and support the happiness and wellbeing of residents.

The projects also demonstrate RTA’s commitment to improving roads, street lighting, stormwater drainage, and traffic flow, which together enhance road safety and accommodate increasing traffic volumes.

Completed Road Projects

Al Khawaneej 2 (Tolerance District)

The internal roads project in Al Khawaneej 2, part of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, involved the construction of six kilometres of internal roads. The roads were connected to Amman Street and surrounding routes to improve overall accessibility.

The project also included:

  • 765 roadside parking spaces

  • 178 lighting poles

  • A dedicated cycling track for safe cycling in the community

These developments ensure smoother movement for vehicles and pedestrians and provide safe spaces for cyclists in the area.

Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1

In Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1, RTA completed 27 kilometres of internal roads. The project involved the conversion of the roundabout at the intersection of First Al Khail Street and Street 23 into a signalized junction to improve traffic flow.

Additional features included:

  • Seven new roundabouts to manage traffic for heavy vehicles

  • Road capacity upgrades to allow up to 3,000 vehicles per hour per road

  • 42 kilometres of road lighting for enhanced visibility and safety

This project ensures efficient traffic movement in one of Dubai’s busiest industrial zones, benefiting businesses, workers, and the transportation of goods.

Roads Under Construction

RTA is currently constructing internal roads in six residential areas to further enhance residents’ mobility and convenience.

Al Awir 1

The Al Awir 1 project includes 16.5 kilometres of internal roads, five kilometres of which are located within the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment. Additionally, a 7.5-kilometre road links Emirates Road to Al Awir 1, featuring:

  • Two lanes in each direction

  • Intersections, roundabouts, and a U-turn near Emirates Road

The new roads and entry/exit points will double the area’s road capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour. The project also adds a 4-kilometre lane along Emirates Road from Al Awir 1 to the Sharjah border, with a speed limit of 110 km/h and a capacity of 2,000 vehicles per hour. This expansion is expected to improve traffic flow along Emirates Road by 16%. Completion is expected by the second quarter of 2026.

Nad Al Sheba 1, 3, and 4

In Nad Al Sheba 1, 3, and 4, the RTA is constructing new roads, enhancing existing routes, and providing additional road links, pedestrian pavements, cycling tracks, landscaping, and beautification works. These upgrades are designed to provide safe and convenient access to key community facilities such as schools, shopping centres, mosques, and parks.

The project includes:

  • 32 kilometres of total roads across the three areas

  • 15 kilometres of pedestrian walkways and cycling tracks

The Nad Al Sheba 1 project is expected to finish by the end of this year, while Nad Al Sheba 3 and 4 are scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027.

Al Warqa’a

RTA’s works in Al Warqa’a aim to improve traffic flow and accessibility for more than 350,000 residents. The project involves:

  • Building a new entry and exit to Al Warqa’a from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road

  • Developing Al Warqa’a 1 Street

  • Converting roundabouts into signalized intersections with special designs to reduce traffic congestion

  • Providing street lighting and parking facilities

Once completed, travel time along Al Warqa’a 1 Street will reduce by 80%, from 20 minutes to just 3.5 minutes. Trip distances will shorten from 5.7 kilometres to 1.5 kilometres, and road capacity will increase by 30%. Completion is expected by the end of this year.

Wadi Al Amardi

The road project in Wadi Al Amardi includes the construction of 15 kilometres of new roads:

  • 4-kilometre expansion of Tripoli Street opposite the area

  • 11 kilometres of internal roads

The project also provides:

  • 10 kilometres of paved surfaces

  • 405 lighting poles

  • Roadside parking for 1,000 vehicles

This development is designed to serve more than 30,000 residents and increase entry and exit capacity by around 3,000 vehicles per hour. Travel distances will reduce from five kilometres to just one kilometre. Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2026.

Benefits of These Road Projects

  1. Improved Traffic Flow:
New roads, lanes, and signalized intersections reduce congestion and improve overall movement of vehicles in residential and industrial areas.

  2. Enhanced Road Safety:
Upgrades to road lighting, roundabouts, pedestrian walkways, and cycling tracks ensure safer travel for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

  3. Better Connectivity:
New entry and exit points, links to main roads, and expanded roads improve access to key community areas, residential zones, and industrial hubs.

  4. Support for Urban Growth:
The projects respond to Dubai’s expanding population and urban development needs, providing sustainable infrastructure that accommodates future growth.

  5. Quality of Life Improvements:
By reducing travel time and distances, residents spend less time commuting, leading to enhanced convenience, wellbeing, and happiness.

Dubai’s RTA continues to prioritize infrastructure development in line with the city’s strategic plans. These projects not only enhance roads and traffic systems but also ensure that communities benefit from better mobility, safety, and access to essential services. As work progresses in Nad Al Sheba, Al Awir, Wadi Al Amardi, and Al Warqa’a, residents can expect safer, faster, and more comfortable travel across their neighbourhoods.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer reiterated that RTA is committed to providing infrastructure that supports Dubai’s urban growth, fosters happiness for residents, and maintains the city’s position as a global model for safe and efficient transportation.
