Dubai Customs, the University of Dubai, and the German Kühne and Nagel University (KLU) have signed an important agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to work together in the areas of education, training, and research. The goal of this partnership is to help prepare students for the future job market, with a special focus on using new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of logistics and customs.
The MoU was signed at a ceremony at the KLU campus in Hamburg, Germany. The people who signed the MoU were H.E. Dr. Abdulla Busenad, the Director General of Dubai Customs; Professor Washika Haak-Saheem, Dean of the Dubai Business School at the University of Dubai; and Professor Andreas Kaplan, President of Kühne and Nagel University (KLU).

Through this MoU, the three organizations aim to create specialized professional programs, as well as offer hands-on training for students at the Dubai Logistics Academy. These programs will be available to students in Dubai Customs' scholarship program, which is run in partnership with the University of Dubai. The main focus of the collaboration will be on logistics services, supply chain management, and how AI can be used to improve customs operations.
As part of the agreement, some students from the scholarship program, who are studying subjects like business administration, digital trade, and supply chain management, started an intensive training program at KLU. The program includes academic lessons, supervised practice, and visits to German companies and logistics centers, like the Port of Hamburg, one of the most important logistics hubs in Europe.
During their visit to the Port of Hamburg, the students learned about advanced systems that use AI and technology to make operations more efficient, automate processes, and improve service quality—all while helping to meet sustainability goals.
This agreement is part of Dubai’s plan to use AI in government services and to train talented young people who will contribute to the country’s future success.
H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, explained that the MoU is an important step in preparing the next generation of workers to keep up with the rapid changes in technology. He said that vocational training is not just an investment in individuals, but also in Dubai's long-term economic growth and global competitiveness. The goal is to help future workers be ready for the jobs of tomorrow.
H.E. Dr. Abdulla Busenad, Director General of Dubai Customs, spoke about how the partnership with KLU, one of the best universities in logistics, is part of a larger plan to improve training programs that meet the needs of the job market. He added that this partnership will help Dubai remain one of the top logistics centers in the world and prepare students to work in global trade and commerce.
Dr. Issa Al Bastaki, President of the University of Dubai, also welcomed the partnership, saying that global partnerships like this one are important for providing students with the best education and preparing them for future jobs.
Professor Andreas Kaplan, President of KLU, expressed excitement about working with Dubai Customs and the University of Dubai. He believes that this MoU will create many opportunities for innovation, growth, and success for all three partners in the future.
In short, this collaboration is a big step towards preparing students for the future by giving them the tools and skills they need to succeed in the world of logistics and technology. It also shows how Dubai is focused on using technology and training to keep up with the fast changes in the global job market.
