Drydocks World, in collaboration with GE Vernova, has taken on a major renewable energy project called Ostwind 4. This project involves creating a powerful 2-gigawatt (GW) offshore wind grid connection, which will generate enough energy to provide electricity to nearly two million homes in Germany. It’s a significant step forward in Germany’s push toward using more renewable energy sources.

The project was awarded by 50Hertz, the Transmission System Operator responsible for managing electricity in eastern Germany, including cities like Berlin and Hamburg. Ostwind 4 will connect wind farms in the Baltic Sea to Germany’s national electricity grid using advanced High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology. This project is especially groundbreaking because it will be the first time Germany uses a 525-kilovolt HVDC system in the Baltic Sea. This advanced system will make it easier and more efficient to transmit energy over long distances.

The project is located about 30 kilometres northeast of Rügen Island in the Baltic Sea. It includes building both offshore and onshore converter stations, as well as laying a 110-kilometre-long DC cable system to link the land and sea components. The converter stations will play a key role in managing and transferring the energy generated by the wind turbines.

Drydocks World, a part of the DP World Group, is responsible for designing, procuring materials, constructing, and installing the topsides and jacket structures of the wind energy converter stations. The topsides, which will house the critical equipment, will be built at Drydocks World's facility in Dubai. Once completed, the equipment will be transported to Germany and installed at the site in the Baltic Sea. These structures will integrate state-of-the-art equipment designed and manufactured in Europe.

GE Vernova will provide the HVDC technology for the project. This includes important components like Voltage-Sourced Converters (VSC), transformers, and SF6-free Gas Insulated Switchgear. GE Vernova will also handle the civil construction work for the onshore converter station and supply grid automation systems.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Drydocks World’s role in the Ostwind 4 project shows our dedication to technical excellence and sustainable infrastructure. This project aligns with DP World’s mission to promote clean energy and economic development. As the energy sector evolves, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that foster a cleaner and greener future.”

Captain Rado Antolovic, CEO of Drydocks World, also shared his thoughts, saying, “The Ostwind 4 project is a prime example of how international cooperation can drive renewable energy solutions. We are honoured to support Germany’s shift to sustainable energy by building cutting-edge offshore infrastructure. This project highlights our commitment to innovation and sustainability, setting a new standard for offshore wind energy.”

Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz Transmission, called the project a significant step forward in harnessing wind energy from the Baltic Sea. He remarked, “This is pioneering work. By deploying 2 GW / 525 kV technology, we’re exploring new possibilities for renewable energy in the region. To fully utilize offshore wind energy, we must work across national borders and ensure legal and regulatory frameworks are in place to connect wind farms in EU waters to Germany’s grid.”

Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification business, highlighted the project’s global significance. He stated, “Ostwind 4 is a milestone in our efforts to electrify and decarbonize the energy sector. By using our advanced HVDC technology, this project demonstrates the essential role offshore wind plays in ensuring energy security for Europe while accelerating the global energy transition.”

The offshore converter station will feature a unique U-shaped jacket structure designed to support wind energy production for decades to come. Drydocks World’s involvement in the Ostwind 4 project underscores its expertise in managing complex offshore projects while advancing sustainable energy solutions.

This project is not just a win for Germany but also a significant leap forward for renewable energy on a global scale. By combining innovative technology and international collaboration, Ostwind 4 is setting a benchmark for future offshore wind projects worldwide.
