DoorDash is taking a bold step into the future of food delivery by partnering with Serve Robotics, a leading developer of sidewalk delivery robots. The collaboration, starting in Los Angeles, will allow autonomous robots to handle smaller, short-distance orders, complementing human couriers on more complex routes.
Serve Robotics has already completed tens of thousands of deliveries across five US cities—Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta—and is now working with both DoorDash and rival Uber. This dual partnership allows robots to stay busy, reducing idle trips and maximizing efficiency, much like gig workers toggling between multiple delivery apps.
The robots, averaging under a mile per trip with an 18-minute delivery time, are ideal for urban areas and lighter orders. Meanwhile, DoorDash’s own in-house delivery robot is designed for suburban zones, capable of carrying larger orders faster over longer distances, even navigating sidewalks and roads.

This move comes as DoorDash expands its experimentation with autonomous solutions, including drone delivery tests with Flytrex and Alphabet’s Wing. Serve Robotics plans to double its fleet to 2,000 robots by year-end, aiming to increase operational efficiency and tap into broader delivery markets like groceries, medication, and institutional settings.
By blending human couriers with autonomous technology, DoorDash hopes to create a flexible delivery network that meets demand across urban and suburban areas, signaling a major shift in how food reaches customers.
