Novak Djokovic Responds to ATP Finals Claim, Talks Retirement Plans

Novak Djokovic has expressed surprise at Italian tennis chief Angelo Binaghi's recent statement suggesting that he will participate in the 2025 ATP Finals. The Serbian ace, currently competing in the Hellenic Championship in Athens, clarified that he has not made any such decision and will only announce his plans after the conclusion of the ongoing tournament.

After his opening match, a straight-sets victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, Djokovic addressed the speculation. “I don’t know where he got that information from. Definitely not from me or my team. I will decide at the end of this tournament,” Djokovic said. He also reflected on the challenges of the match, noting that Tabilo had won both of their previous encounters on clay courts this year and last year. “I was more under tension before the match than some other matches, and I really tried to draw the energy from the crowd,” he added.

Djokovic was also confronted once again with questions about his potential retirement, a topic that clearly frustrated him. “Why do I need to get this question all the time? I think I’ve earned the right to play for as long as I really want,” he said. Referencing fellow professional Stan Wawrinka, Djokovic agreed with Wawrinka’s stance on enjoying the game on one’s own terms.

“Personally, I understand people’s curiosity, but right now that doesn’t exist in my head. Of course, it’s crossed my mind a few times, but at the end of the day I’ve decided to simply play on my own terms — to play where I want to play, not where others think I should,” Djokovic added, emphasizing his focus on maintaining control over his career decisions.

The 2025 Hellenic Championship continues in Athens, with Djokovic showing strong form as he progresses through the tournament. While speculation about the ATP Finals continues, the world No. 1 remains focused on performing well in Athens before considering his next steps on the ATP Tour.
