Terminal 1 (T1) at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is reopening today, April 15, after being closed for nine months. The closure happened after part of the terminal's canopy collapsed due to heavy rains. With T1 reopening and Terminal 2 (T2) going under renovation, airlines like IndiGo and Akasa Air are now moving their domestic flights to T1.
T1 will be fully operational starting today, and it will stay that way until T2 finishes its renovation work.
Before the renovation, IndiGo and Akasa Air used to operate from Terminal 2, which managed around 270 to 280 flights every day and handled over 46,000 passengers each day.

Important Things to Know: Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is the biggest airport in India and has three terminals: T1, T2, and T3. The airport also has four runways. Right now, T1 and T2 are used only for domestic flights.
From today, all domestic flights that were operating from T2 will now move to T1 because T2 will be closed for maintenance. Also, one of the airport's runways is under maintenance, so this change is necessary to keep everything running smoothly.
IndiGo has told its passengers that they will get information about the change in terminals through SMS, calls, and emails. IndiGo advises passengers to check their PNR (Passenger Name Record) before going to the airport. The PNR will show which terminal to go to for their flight. Passengers can check their PNR details on the IndiGo website or mobile app.
Akasa Air has also informed passengers that it is moving all its flights to Terminal 1 from April 15. The airline's team is working hard to make this switch as smooth as possible for everyone.
The newly expanded Terminal 1 is big enough to handle 40 million passengers. It has been expanded from 55,740 square meters to 2,06,950 square meters, so there’s more space for passengers.
Terminal 1 is equipped with 100 check-in counters, 36 Self Baggage Drop kiosks, 108 Common Usage Self-Service kiosks for easy check-in, and 20 Automated Tray Retrieval Systems to make security checks faster.
There is also a metro station at Terminal 1. It connects to the rest of the city through the Magenta Line, which links Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden and stops at Terminal 1.
Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam said on Monday that T1 and T3 will be able to handle the extra passenger traffic. He also mentioned that there should not be any overcrowding even with the closure of T2.
So, passengers are encouraged to check their flight details carefully and make sure they go to the right terminal at the airport.
