Good dental care is important for everyone. Many people think brushing once in the morning is enough, or that drinking tea and coffee daily does not harm the teeth. But according to Dr Siddhant Bhargava, a well-known nutritionist who has worked with celebrities like Alia Bhatt and Sara Ali Khan, our daily habits may be slowly damaging our teeth without us noticing.
In a recent video, Dr Bhargava explained that tooth enamel, the outer white layer of our teeth, is the strongest part of the human body. It protects the teeth from damage, food, and bacteria. However, acids in everyday foods and drinks can weaken this enamel over time. Once enamel becomes thin, the teeth start to turn yellow, feel sensitive, and become more likely to get cavities.
Dr Bhargava says that drinks like tea, coffee, packaged juices, and even some salads have acids that slowly wear down the enamel. Many people drink these beverages every day, sometimes multiple times a day. If someone also forgets to brush properly or skips brushing at night, the damage can increase faster.
The important point he mentions is that enamel does not grow back. Once it is lost, it cannot be restored naturally. When enamel becomes thin, it exposes the inner layer called dentin. Dentin is softer and more sensitive. That is why some people feel sharp pain when drinking cold water, eating sweets, or brushing.
However, this does not mean that people need to stop drinking tea or coffee forever. Dr Bhargava suggests small but effective changes in daily routines that can help protect the teeth:
Use enamel-protection toothpaste. These special kinds of toothpaste help strengthen the enamel and reduce the effect of acids.
Rinse the mouth with water after eating or drinking. This washes away acids and leftover food, protecting the teeth from damage.
Brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Hard brushing can scratch enamel and make the damage worse.
According to him, these habits are simple but very important. Even small daily improvements can protect teeth in the long term.
Dentists also remind people not to skip brushing at night. When we sleep, saliva flow reduces, and bacteria can act more strongly on the teeth. This increases the chance of cavities. So brushing before bed is just as important as brushing in the morning.
Another helpful habit is limiting how long acidic drinks stay in the mouth. For example, instead of slowly sipping tea for hours, drink it in a shorter time. This reduces the acids in contact with teeth.
Dr Bhargava’s message is a reminder that oral hygiene is not only about how white our teeth look. It is about protecting the layers that keep our teeth strong for many years. A healthy mouth helps in eating well, speaking clearly, and feeling confident.
In daily life, it is easy to ignore dental care while focusing on skin, hair, or fitness. But teeth are just as important. Good oral hygiene prevents pain, saves money on dental treatments, and keeps us healthy overall.
This message is especially useful for young people, who often drink cold drinks, coffee, and flavored juices without thinking of long-term effects. Small steps today can prevent big dental problems in the future.
Taking care of our teeth is not difficult. It only requires a few minutes each day and smart choices. The earlier we start, the better our chances of keeping our teeth strong and healthy for life.
