The Cybersecurity Council (CSC) has warned the public against sharing important or personal information on social media platforms, saying that oversharing can expose individuals to fraud, identity theft and serious privacy breaches.
In a recent advisory, the Council stressed that cybercriminals can misuse sensitive data shared online to design targeted scams. It explained that even small pieces of information posted publicly may be combined and used in fraudulent schemes.
According to the CSC, nearly 40 per cent of users have experienced privacy violations by sharing personal details about their lives and families on social media. The Council warned that careless online behaviour significantly increases the risk of theft, cyber fraud and identity theft.
The Council advised users not to share detailed information such as home or workplace addresses, personal phone numbers, travel plans, or private family photos. It said that such information can be exploited by fraudsters using advanced technologies to steal financial and personal data.
The CSC emphasised that individuals play a key role in protecting their own data. It urged the public to:
Keep software and mobile applications updated
Limit access to cameras, microphones and location services
Use strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication
Avoid unsecured platforms
Regularly monitor online accounts
Carefully verify suspicious messages and links
The Council also highlighted the importance of securing social media accounts and protecting mobile devices used for both personal and professional purposes.
It added that cybersecurity remains a major challenge in today’s digital world. Preventive steps, responsible online behavior and public awareness are essential to reduce cyber risks and protect assets belonging to individuals, companies and institutions.
As part of its efforts, the Council launched the “Cyber Pulse” awareness campaign for the second consecutive year on social media platforms. The initiative supports the UAE’s vision to build a secure digital environment, promote cybersecurity awareness among families and individuals, and strengthen trust in the country’s digital ecosystem amid rapid technological growth.
