On Friday morning, police in Kerala arrested a man named Govindachamy. He is a convict in a very sad and serious case from 2011. This case was about the rape and murder of a young woman named Soumya. Govindachamy had escaped from his prison cell in the Kannur Central Jail early in the morning. However, the police caught him within a few hours after he ran away.

Who Is Govindachamy?

Govindachamy is a person who was found guilty and punished for a horrible crime in 2011. He was serving a life sentence. This means he was supposed to stay in jail for his whole life because he did something extremely wrong. He was kept in a high-security prison in Kerala’s Kannur district. His crime was very cruel and shocked many people in Kerala and across India at that time.

What Was The Soumya Case?

Soumya was a young woman who worked as an assistant in a supermarket in Ernakulam. She was only 23 years old. On February 1, 2011, she boarded a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shornur. This was her daily route to go back home. When the train left Vallathol Nagar railway station, something terrible happened.

Govindachamy attacked Soumya in the train compartment. He did not care about her safety or life. He hit her head repeatedly against the walls of the train compartment. After hurting her badly, he threw her out of the moving train. Soumya fell down near the railway track and was unconscious.

But Govindachamy did not stop there. He jumped out of the slow-moving train himself. He went near Soumya, who was lying injured and helpless by the tracks. He picked her up and carried her into the nearby woods close to the railway line. There, he raped her. It was a horrible and heart-breaking crime.

When Was He Arrested For The Crime?

After this incident, the police started searching for him. They found and arrested Govindachamy from the Palakkad railway station the very next day. Soumya was taken to the Government Medical College in Thrissur for treatment. Sadly, after fighting for her life for five days, she died on February 6, 2011. Her death caused huge anger, sadness, and fear among people, especially women, because it showed how unsafe public places can be if criminals roam freely.

How Did Govindachamy Escape The Jail?

Govindachamy was locked in the 10th block of Kannur Central Jail. But on Friday, around 4 am, he managed to get out of his cell without anyone noticing. The police received information about his escape only around 6:30 am. This delay could have helped him run far away, but the police acted quickly after knowing about it.

How Did The Police Catch Him So Fast?

As soon as the police were informed, they started a big search operation. They shared his escape news with all police teams and departments. They also informed the public through news channels and media so that if anyone saw him, they could tell the police.

The police checked CCTV camera footage from different parts of the city. They received a lot of clues and information from people in the area. Finally, they found him hiding inside a well. This well was located behind the office of the National Sample Survey in Talap, a neighbourhood near the jail. He was hiding there from early morning until 11 am when the police caught him.

What Did The Police Say?

Kannur superintendent of police, P Nidhin Raj, spoke about the incident. He said, “We got the information that he had escaped around 6.30 am. We told all police teams immediately. The public was alerted through media. We analysed CCTV visuals in the city and got many inputs from the public. He was found hiding inside a well of an abandoned compound in Talap.”

The police are also trying to find out if anyone helped him from inside the jail. SP Raj said that they suspect he was planning this escape for the last few days. This shows that the escape was not sudden. He might have been thinking about it for some time and finally tried it early morning when everyone was asleep or busy with other work in the jail.

Why Is This News Important?

This news is important because it shows that even dangerous criminals can plan to escape from high-security jails if they get a chance. It also shows how fast the police worked to catch him before he could run away too far or harm anyone else. People are also questioning how he managed to get out of his cell without any jail staff noticing.

What Happens Next?

The police will now question him about how he escaped. They will also check if any jail staff or other prisoners helped him. The jail authorities will have to make their security tighter so that such escapes do not happen again in the future.

Why Should Students Know About This News?

Students should know about this news because it teaches them:

  • Crime is never the solution to any problem. It only destroys many lives.

  • Police and law are there to catch and punish criminals, but safety is also our own responsibility in public places.

  • Jail security systems should be strong to keep dangerous people locked away.

  • Planning and teamwork, like the police showed here, can solve problems fast.

The Soumya murder case is a very sad reminder of how a normal journey can turn dangerous because of cruel people. Even after so many years, her family and people in Kerala remember her as a brave girl who tried to fight back. Govindachamy’s quick arrest after his escape gives relief to the public. It also shows the efficiency of Kerala police in handling such risky situations without any delay.
