CMA CGM Unveils Innovative Bond Strategy Tied to Air France KLM Shares

CMA CGM, a leading shipping giant, has unveiled a strategic plan to secure funds through a unique bond offering. The French maritime company is looking to raise approximately 325 million euros by introducing a three-year bond that can be repaid in Air France KLM shares.

This bond, classified as an exchangeable bond, provides the company with the flexibility to settle the bond in either cash, Air France KLM shares, or a combination of both. This initiative signals CMA CGM's intention to diversify its financial sources and lessen the strain on its cash reserves.

The company currently holds an 8.8 percent stake in Air France KLM, acquired in 2022 during a strategic cargo partnership with the airline. That partnership concluded in early 2024, coinciding with the end of the lock-up period in February, giving CMA CGM complete freedom to utilize or trade its shares.

Ramon Fernandez, Chief Financial Officer, expressed confidence in Air France KLM's leadership team, citing an optimistic outlook on the potential appreciation of the airline's shares. He indicated that this bond is a cost-effective means of raising capital while maintaining financial flexibility.

If CMA CGM decides to repay the bond using Air France KLM shares, it will be at a premium of 30 to 35 percent based on the average share price as of December 9. This structure makes the bond an attractive proposition for investors keen on profiting from potential future share price increases.
