The wait is finally over for Christopher Nolan fans. On Monday, Universal Studios revealed that the famous director would be adapting Homer's epic poem The Odyssey for his next movie. Described as a "mythic action epic," the film is set to be released in theatres worldwide on July 17, 2026.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal announced that Nolan's The Odyssey will be filmed across the globe using brand-new IMAX technology. This marks the first time that Homer's classic story will be shown on IMAX screens.

The movie will feature a star-studded cast with actors like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron.
While Christopher Nolan is known for his work on historical and science fiction films such as Oppenheimer, Inception, and Interstellar, this film will take him in a new direction. The Odyssey is based on ancient Greek mythology and tells the story of Odysseus, who faces gods, monsters, and many challenges while trying to return home after the Trojan War.
This is not the first time The Odyssey has been adapted for film. There was a 1954 movie called Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas, and the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) was loosely inspired by the epic. However, Nolan’s version is expected to bring his unique style of realism and powerful visuals to the ancient tale.
This announcement comes at the end of a historic year for Nolan. His movie Oppenheimer won him Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, and he was recently knighted by King Charles, adding even more excitement to his upcoming project.
