The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its official report on global cholera cases for the year 2024. The report highlights a worrying increase in both the number of people falling sick and dying from cholera, a disease that can be prevented and treated effectively.
Cholera, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, spreads quickly through water contaminated with human faeces. The disease can cause severe diarrhoea and dehydration, which, if left untreated, can lead to death. Despite being preventable with proper hygiene and treatable with medical care, cholera continues to claim thousands of lives around the world.

Rising Cases and Deaths
According to the WHO report, reported cholera cases increased by 5 percent in 2024 compared to 2023. More alarmingly, deaths from the disease rose by 50 percent, with over 6,000 people dying last year. This shows that while the number of people getting sick rose moderately, the disease became far deadlier in many regions.
The increase in deaths has raised concerns among health experts worldwide. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if proper hygiene, sanitation, clean water, and timely medical care were available.
Factors Driving the Spread of Cholera
The WHO report points out several major factors that are contributing to the rise of cholera worldwide:
Conflict and Political Instability: In countries facing wars and conflicts, people often have limited access to safe water and health services. This makes them more vulnerable to diseases like cholera.
Climate Change: Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts can damage water systems, making safe drinking water scarce and increasing the risk of cholera outbreaks.
Population Displacement: Refugees and people forced to leave their homes often live in crowded conditions with poor sanitation, which provides the perfect environment for cholera to spread.
Poor Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Infrastructure: Many areas still lack proper toilets, sewage systems, and clean water, which makes it easy for cholera bacteria to spread.
Geographical Spread
In 2024, cholera affected 60 countries, up from 45 countries in 2023. Most of the cases were concentrated in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Together, these regions accounted for 98 percent of all reported cases.
Countries with ongoing conflicts or fragile health systems were particularly hard-hit. These regions often struggle to provide basic health services, safe drinking water, and hygiene education to their populations, making cholera outbreaks more frequent and severe.
Preventing and Controlling Cholera
Experts stress that cholera is both preventable and treatable. Governments, donors, and communities have a critical role to play in controlling outbreaks and reducing deaths. The following measures are essential:
Access to Safe Water and Sanitation: Ensuring people have clean drinking water and proper toilets is the most effective way to prevent cholera. Communities must also have safe waste disposal systems to prevent contamination of water sources.
Hygiene Education: People need clear information about how cholera spreads and how they can protect themselves. Simple measures such as washing hands with soap, boiling water, and using toilets properly can save lives.
Rapid Treatment: People who fall sick with cholera need immediate medical care. Oral rehydration solutions and antibiotics can prevent deaths if given on time. Governments and health agencies must ensure medical facilities are accessible and well-stocked during outbreaks.
Vaccination: Cholera vaccines are effective in preventing infection during outbreaks. Investing in vaccine production and making vaccines available in high-risk areas can help control the spread of the disease.
Strong Surveillance and Diagnostics: Health authorities must track cholera cases carefully to detect outbreaks early. Rapid testing and reporting can guide an effective response and prevent the disease from spreading further.
Global Responsibility
The WHO emphasizes that tackling cholera requires collective global action. Countries must strengthen their health systems, invest in water and sanitation infrastructure, and educate communities about hygiene practices. International organizations and donors can support these efforts by providing resources, funding vaccines, and helping with rapid response during emergencies.
Experts also highlight that cholera is a reflection of broader social and economic challenges. Inequality, lack of infrastructure, and political instability all contribute to the vulnerability of populations. Addressing these underlying issues is crucial to preventing future outbreaks.
Hope for the Future
While the 2024 cholera statistics are alarming, the disease can be controlled with concerted effort. Communities, governments, and global health organizations have the tools to prevent deaths and reduce infections. By ensuring access to clean water, proper sanitation, hygiene education, and medical care, the world can significantly reduce the impact of cholera.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, has repeatedly stressed that cholera deaths are preventable. The rise in deaths in 2024 is a warning that more must be done to protect vulnerable populations, especially in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Cholera remains a serious public health threat in 2024. Over 6,000 lives were lost, and millions were affected. The increase in cases and deaths is driven by conflict, climate change, displacement, and weak water and sanitation systems. However, with timely action, access to clean water, better hygiene, vaccination, and treatment, cholera can be prevented and controlled.
The WHO calls on governments, communities, and international organizations to step up their efforts and work together to ensure that no one dies from a preventable disease like cholera. Every individual, family, and community has a role to play in preventing cholera and saving lives.
