Taipei has reported the detection of a Chinese aircraft carrier group moving towards the waters separating Taiwan from mainland China, shortly after Beijing conducted a live-fire exercise near the self-governed island. The Liaoning aircraft carrier group was observed overnight in proximity to the Taipei-administered Pratas Islands, which are situated approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Taiwan, and is now heading north towards the strategically significant Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan's defense ministry issued a statement via the social media platform X, confirming that the Chinese navy vessels, led by the Liaoning, navigated through waters near the Dongsha (Pratas Islands) before continuing their course northward towards the Taiwan Strait. In response to the development, Taiwan's military is closely monitoring the situation and has taken appropriate measures.
This movement comes in the wake of recent large-scale military drills conducted by China around Taiwan, which were met with condemnation from Taipei and its primary ally, Washington. During these exercises, China deployed a record number of fighter jets and warships to encircle Taiwan, labeling the operations as a "stern warning" against what it describes as "separatist acts" by pro-independence forces in Taiwan.

Additionally, following these military maneuvers, China announced the initiation of a live-fire exercise on Tuesday in a maritime area approximately 105 kilometers from Taiwan. This increase in military activities has raised tensions in the region, heightening concerns about potential confrontations.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, a US and Canadian warship traversed the 180-kilometer-wide Taiwan Strait. Such passages by American and allied naval forces are part of routine operations aimed at affirming the strait’s status as an international waterway. Beijing, however, has criticized these movements, claiming they disrupt "peace and stability" in the strait, which remains a flashpoint in the ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan.
As the situation evolves, both Taipei and Beijing continue to engage in military posturing, underscoring the precarious balance of power in the region and the ongoing dispute over Taiwan's status.
