New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, made history as the city’s first Muslim and youngest-ever mayor. Mamdani, the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, incorporated elements of Hindi cinema into his campaign’s design and messaging. Aneesh Bhoopathy, the designer behind the campaign visuals, revealed that Mamdani provided Bollywood posters as inspiration. Videos reimagined iconic film moments, such as Amitabh Bachchan’s famous monologue from Deewar (1975), which Mamdani adapted to communicate his vision for the city. In one memorable clip, he echoed Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic pose, smiling and addressing viewers directly, reinforcing his connection to the audience. Other campaign materials drew inspiration from hits like Om Shanti Om and Karz, creatively adapting film lines to explain voting processes and campaign promises.

Bhoopathy emphasized that the campaign intentionally broke from conventional political design norms, embracing a bold and distinct visual language to reflect Mamdani’s South Asian identity and dynamic approach. This strategy resonated strongly with voters, helping him secure a decisive victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, and ultimately clinching the mayoral seat.

Mamdani’s historic win, coupled with his campaign’s Bollywood-inspired visuals, marks a notable moment in modern American politics, highlighting the growing influence of cultural storytelling and representation in civic engagement.
