Australia is taking significant steps to address the growing concerns over the impact of social media on young users, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announcing a new policy aimed at banning children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. This new initiative is set to be formally introduced in late November, with Albanese emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting children from the harmful effects of online exposure.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Albanese directly addressed the issue, saying, "This one is for the mums and dads. Social media is doing real harm to kids and I'm calling time on it." The Prime Minister highlighted that the government is now taking strong action against tech companies that fail to protect young users, noting that the proposed laws are designed to shift the responsibility to the tech giants themselves.
Under the new regulations, it will be up to the social media companies to enforce age limits, ensuring that only users above the age of 16 can access their platforms. Albanese reassured parents, stressing that the burden will not fall on them to monitor their children’s online activities, nor will there be penalties for children who attempt to bypass the age restrictions. "The onus will not be on parents or young people. There will be no penalties for users," he said, attempting to alleviate some of the pressure felt by parents concerned about their children’s safety in the digital world.

The proposed age restriction was first mentioned earlier this year by the Prime Minister, but this marks the first time a firm age limit of 16 has been publicly specified. The initiative comes in response to growing concerns about the dangers children face online, including cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and the adverse impact on mental health.
This new measure is expected to be presented to state and territory leaders later this week, who will have the opportunity to discuss the law before it is officially introduced to parliament in late November. The policy has already garnered broad bipartisan support across Australian politics, with many lawmakers agreeing that steps must be taken to protect younger generations from the unregulated and often harmful content they may encounter on social media platforms.
Tech companies and social media platforms are now under increasing pressure to take proactive measures to ensure compliance with the new laws, marking a significant shift in the approach to digital safety for children in Australia.
