More than 1,400 citizens from 36 African nations are reported to be fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, Ukrainian officials revealed on Friday. The numbers have raised concerns about the recruitment tactics being used and the extreme risks involved for foreign fighters.

According to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, Moscow has been actively recruiting African citizens to join its military ranks. Some are reportedly lured with promises of lucrative contracts, only to face immediate and deadly combat missions. Sybiha warned that many of these recruits are sent directly into high-risk operations, leading to heavy casualties.

“Foreign citizens in the Russian army have a sad fate,” Sybiha said, emphasizing that most are deployed in what he described as “meat assaults,” where survival is uncertain. The minister urged African governments to alert their citizens to the dangers of these military contracts, which he equated to a death sentence.

Several African countries have started taking notice. South Africa confirmed it would investigate reports of 17 of its citizens joining Russian-linked mercenary groups, after distress messages were received requesting safe passage home. Kenya has also reported that several of its nationals were detained in Russian military camps under similar circumstances.

While Ukrainian authorities have identified 1,436 African recruits so far, officials believe the true number could be higher. Most foreign fighters captured by Ukraine were reportedly taken during their very first mission, underscoring the severe dangers these individuals face on the battlefield.

The trend highlights a growing concern over the use of foreign fighters in modern conflicts, as well as the ethical and legal implications of recruiting individuals from distant countries for combat roles in a war they may have little connection to. Analysts suggest that such recruitment strategies not only endanger lives but also complicate international relations between Russia and African nations.
