Abu Dhabi Enhances Sustainability and Supports Smallholder Farms with New Agricultural Regulations.

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) recently announced a new regulatory framework for smallholder plant production farms in Abu Dhabi. This initiative is aimed at enhancing sustainable agricultural practices and boosting the local agricultural economy.

Under the leadership of Eng Ahmed Khalid Othman, Executive Director of the Agricultural Affairs Sector at ADAFSA, the authority has established a set of conditions and controls designed to improve the quality and competitiveness of local agricultural products. These measures are part of ADAFSA's broader strategy to support small-scale farmers and promote sustainable development within the agricultural sector of Abu Dhabi, contributing significantly to the emirate’s food security.

The new regulations stipulate standards for maintaining general farm hygiene, require official approvals for setting up packing houses, and mandate the use of materials approved for food processing. Additionally, the regulation emphasizes the need for a traceability system to identify plant products, ensuring a robust framework for quality and safety.

Eng Othman highlighted that this decision builds upon the principles set by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ADAFSA's Decision No. (3) of 2020, which issued the Agricultural Requirements System for the Farms of Abu Dhabi. He expressed confidence that these regulations would have a substantial positive impact on the agricultural sector, enhancing both productivity and resource efficiency.

ADAFSA is committed to providing continuous support to smallholder farmers through advanced training and extension services. These efforts aim to foster best agricultural practices and support scientific research and development in the sector, further securing the sustainability and efficiency of agricultural production in the region.

Eng Othman also encouraged the community to support local farmers by purchasing directly from them, underscoring the importance of community involvement in achieving food security in Abu Dhabi.

This initiative reflects the Abu Dhabi government’s dedication to nurturing an environment that supports smallholder farmers and ensures the longevity and prosperity of the agricultural sector.
